Each contractor has undergone a very rigorous and extensive (and expensive for them) selection process. From an original list of about 70 interested companies, just seven have been selected. SMARTE EAST contractors submitted high quality responses to a very large number of questions (prepared by an external specialist procurement consultancy) on all areas of contracting (e.g. financial, technical, Health and Safety, etc.) as well as two interviews including a half day office visit. A key prerequisite of the office interviews was that the interviewees must be the SMARTE EAST delivery team if appointed. The whole selection process took place over many months.
